First Grade
Everything begins with a strong foundation in fundamental skills, and Washingtonville students develop theirs through programs like Fundations and Math Bubbles.
Fundations focuses on the essential building blocks of literacy, providing the groundwork for phonics, spelling, and early reading comprehension. Math Bubbles introduces core math concepts in an engaging and interactive manner, so that students grasp both the basic principles and an enthusiasm for the subject. Our first grade teachers really set our students on a trajectory for success!
Second Grade
In second grade, our teachers create dynamic learning environments with activities like Mystery Bags, which promotes communication and critical thinking! The Five Finger Rule guides book selection, encouraging independent reading at appropriate levels and nurturing a love for literature. Meanwhile, integrating art and writing empowers students to express themselves visually and verbally. It's innovative approaches like these that lead to the types of inclusive classrooms where students learn together and also develop vital social skills!
Third Grade
Students have been having a great time taking part in the district's Choose Love program! Choose Love teaches that true courage lies not in the absence of fear, but in the ability to act with love and compassion despite it.
The program embodies the essence of courage in its core values and teachings, and instills in students the bravery to face challenges head-on, with kindness and compassion. Students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, speak up for what they believe in, and stand up for others!
This emphasis on courage equips them with essential life skills and a sense of empathy and community.
