Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presentation highlights black history for first and second graders

First and second-grade students at Little Britain sat in the cafeteria last Wednesday morning as they watched a theater show about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from Bright Star Touring Theater.

During the show, Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous quote from his “I Have a Dream” speech was recited by one of the actors. It allowed students to reflect on the sacrifices people like Dr. King made so that they can have the freedoms they have now.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Dr. Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist and an advocate for peaceful protest. He inspired many events in history like the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, which is well known because of people like Rosa Parks. She refused to give up her seat in the front of the bus during a time when people of color had to sit in the back.

Not only did students learn about the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, but they also learned about the Freedom Rides and Sit In’s, which were when people of color challenged segregation because they believed it was unfair.

Last Monday, students observed MLK Day, this assembly allowed them to learn about the significance of Dr. King and his role in history. Bright Star Touring Theater provides live educational experiences for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade.

As Black History Month approaches, this presentation allowed students to receive an introduction to black history and begin to learn about prominent black people who influenced and shaped history.
