Little Britain Elementary School Principal Dr. Christopher Barrie and Assistant Principal Jeannette Adon-Perez presented to families and attendees at Thursday night’s board meeting and spoke about the different values and initiatives that have been a key part of building a successful community at Little Britain.
In alignment with Washingtonville Central School District’s three priority areas, Dr. Barrie and Ms. Adon-Perez spoke about the importance of developing the student experience and creating a positive space for all students. The district’s three priority areas are Student Experience, Academic Excellence, and Community Connection.
“We started off our first grade orientation with students signing a pledge to Little Britain saying they’re going to be respectful, they’re going to be responsible, they’re going to be safe, and they’re going to model the true values of Little Britain Elementary School,” Dr. Barrie said.
Ms. Adon-Perez explained that creating a safe and inclusive environment is done by creating purposeful partnerships and ensuring that college, career, and civic readiness pathways are included in developing the student experience.
“We want students to develop their voice and have confidence in themselves,” said Ms. Adon-Perez. “We want them to have critical thinking skills and we ask them why and how we can improve things. We want them to be problem solvers.”
Through learning curriculums like Science 21, which helps students develop their coding skills, Project Lead the Way, which allows students to engage in STEM-related learning activities, and events like International Night, they are providing students with opportunities to explore their various interests and passions. In fourth grade, they can join the chorus and in fifth grade, they can join the band.
Student surveys are conducted to understand more about what the students want and need and the Little Britain Ambassadors program allows students to practice being global citizens. Round table discussions have been hosted with ENL students allowing them to provide feedback on their experience in the school, therefore allowing faculty and staff to enhance the program.
Their presentation concluded with a performance from the fourth and fifth grade chorus led by music teacher Devin Cassidy. In honor of Veterans Day and as a tribute to the armed forces, they performed a medley of the fight songs from each branch of the military and ended their performance with America The Beautiful.
