Little Britain raises money for breast cancer awareness

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff at Little Britain Elementary School have been wearing pink to raise funds for Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mr. Barrie, principal of Little Britain Elementary School, developed the idea of creating and selling t-shirts as a breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Teacher Ashley Scelia created the pink t-shirts that were sold to faculty and staff. Initially this was intended to be a Little Britain event but word spread quickly through the district and soon staff at other WCSD buildings got involved. The sale of 195 t-shirts raised a little over $1,000, which was donated to Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and support services for women and families in the Hudson Valley affected by breast cancer. Mr. Barrie chose Miles of Hope because every dollar donated to the organization stays in the area, helping local family, friends and neighbors get treatment and fight breast cancer with dignity.

Every Friday in October, LB staff have been wearing their pink t-shirts to raise awareness of breast cancer. On October 28, the building hosted a “pink out”, asking all students and staff to wear pink. That afternoon, Mr. Barrie presented a check to a representative from Miles of Hope Foundation. “An event like this is a great way to unite our school, to work together for the good of our community,” said Mr. Barrie. “Many members of the WCSD community have been directly affected by this horrible disease. We hope next year we can donate even more money!”
