Little Britain’s fifth graders honored in moving up ceremony

Little Britain families and friends gathered at Washingtonville Middle School, smiling ear to ear as they watched their loved ones walk across the stage to receive their certificates for Little Britain’s fifth grade moving up ceremony on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The masters of ceremony for the event included scholars Asiyah Abdul-Jabbar, Samantha Bailey, Ayla Clarke, and D’Ree Murray. The evening opened up with an introduction from Principal Dr. Christopher Barrie, followed by the presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dr. Barrie and music teacher Mr. Leonard Klopchin presented various special awards to the students such as the Triple “C” Awards, Citizenship Awards, and Josephine Giacco Award. Once the awards were given, the masters of ceremony recognized those who participated in clubs throughout the school year before students received their moving up certificates.

The ceremony finished off with students singing “Love Live” by Taylor Swift, with words written in part by scholar D’Ree Murray from Mrs. Christine Nimmo’s class. Then, Dr. Barrie addressed the students with a closing remark.

“Over the years, we have watched you become confident, thoughtful and creative communicators,” said Dr. Barrie. “You've learned to speak up for what you believe in, whether it's in class discussions, during Little Britain Ambassador meetings, or on the playground. You've learned that your voice matters and that you can use it to make a difference.”
