Students learn about the cycle of chickens, eight chicks hatch

Mrs. Zupko’s 2nd-grade class has been busy these past few weeks! They had eggs set in an incubator and excitement was building! They have been researching and reading about the cycle of chickens.

They have been learning about the various components of an egg, which includes understanding everything a chick needs to develop, grow and eventually hatch its shell. Students have learned what the optimum temperature and conditions the eggs need to be incubated in to hatch and survive after hatching.

After 21 days of waiting, they have hatched! As each chick hatched, they watched with anticipation as they were able to witness it and make their own observations. These students are the proud “parents” of eight little chicks!

Now, students are preparing the chicks to go back to the farmer who will raise them to lay more eggs. Then the cycle repeats!
