Little Britain Elementary students learn about allergy awareness and prevention

Third graders at Little Britain Elementary School took part in an engaging presentation on allergy awareness and prevention on Tuesday afternoon. The presentation was led by Washingtonville High School ninth grader Juliana Serrano and her mother, Leidy Serrano.

Returning for a second year, the mother-daughter duo presented on behalf of Red Sneakers for Oakley, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about food allergies and promoting safe, inclusive environments.

The presentation covered various types of allergens, how they affect the body and the steps to take in an emergency situation, including the importance of getting an adult’s help and knowing how to use an EpiPen if necessary. Additionally, it stressed the importance of reading food labels and providing allergy-safe food options.

Students were encouraged to be kind and inclusive towards their classmates with allergies. They even had the opportunity to choose a toy from a teal pumpkin, which symbolizes the support for offering non-food treats during holidays, a movement inspired by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE).

The presentation concluded with a simple but powerful reminder: “Friends don’t let friends eat alone.”
