Little Britain's newest addition allows students to send letters to troops year-round

Students at Little Britain Elementary School lined up towards the front of the school, patiently waiting to slip letters into a mailbox covered with stickers from each military branch. The students are writing inspiring letters to troops throughout the year as part of a school-wide ELA project. This project was created by Airamadislen Mundo, a Sergeant with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, a veteran's wife and Little Britain Parent Teacher Organization member.

In years past, students have written letters for local veterans and presented them on Veterans Day. Now, students have the opportunity to write letters year-round to be sent to different units aboard.

“I think it’s a really good connection with our troops,” said Principal Dr. Christopher Barrie. “We’re a military school and we want to support our troops any way we can.”

In preparation for Veterans Day, Little Britain students have been learning about each of the military branches and what it takes to be a part of them. Students in fifth grade have been researching about the branches and creating poster boards full of information.

“Veterans Day is when you honor all the veterans that served in the Army and military,” said fifth-grader Jake Milteer. “My grandpa was in the Army.”

The fourth and fifth chorus has been preparing for a special performance for the school’s annual Veterans Day breakfast. The group will be singing melodies of each of the branches' fight songs for local veterans. The breakfast will be on November 7 to recognize those who have fought to keep our country safe.
