Winter cheer and creativity multiples at Little Britain

Fourth grade students in Ciarra Digiuilio’s class at Little Britain Elementary School combined math, art and winter cheer during a special project on the Friday before break.

The lesson helped students practice double-digit multiplication using the area (or “box”) model. After selecting their own equation to solve, students illustrated their work on a snowflake, then decorated it with their own colorful winter-themed design.

“So first you do all the math, and you can pick whatever math equation you want,” fourth grader Dominic Bonanno explained. “Then you color it and cut it out.”

Dominic chose 43 x 23 for his project, using his preferred multiplication approach for solving double-digit equations.

"I’d say box math is my favorite for right now, but I think it might change,” he added.

The project wrapped up the week and the holiday season, with both academic challenge and festive creativity.
